Dr. Derek Sanders
Dr. Sanders was born and raised in Michigan but now the 305 is home! He went to college at Michigan State University and graduated Summa Cum Laude. Dr. Sanders then received his Doctorate in Dental Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania where he graduated at the top of his class. While in dental school, he also completed a dual degree program obtaining a Master of Business Administration with a focus in health care management.
Throughout his career, he has received numerous distinguished awards and was one of a few select students inducted into the National Dental Honor Society, Omicron Kappa Upsilon. Following his dental training, he practiced as a restorative dentist in Philadelphia, PA. His passion for continuing learning and interest in orthodontics led him to the University of Connecticut, where he was the chief resident and earned a postdoctoral Certificate in Orthodontics and a Master of Dental Science.
Dr. Sanders is a Board Certified Orthodontist, among a very small group worldwide to achieve this additional level of recognized excellence and is the youngest orthodontist in Miami to successfully pass the clinical orthodontic board exam. He also works with the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital as part of the Craniofacial Team and is a member of:
- American Association of Orthodontics
- College of the Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics
- American Dental Association
- Florida Dental Association and Miami Dade Dental Society
- Florida and Southern Association of Orthodontics
- Roth/Williams International Society of Orthodontists.
Dr. Sanders is a highly skilled clinician who is loved for his warm personality and kind heart. He has lectured nationally and internationally on various topics in orthodontics and has several original articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He spends countless hours in continuing education and is dedicated to providing the best orthodontic care for his patients. He completed a two-year advanced course in functional occlusion from the Roth-Williams Center for Advanced Orthodontic Education and is an Alumnus of the prestigious Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne, Florida.
Now a resident of Miami, Dr. Sanders thoroughly enjoys being a contributing member of the community. He loves to travel, play golf, be on the water and most of all spend time with his two daughters. He is a die-hard UM Hurricane and Miami Heat fan who you can catch at almost every seasonal game. Oh and the next time you’re in our office don’t forget to ask him what celebrity he used to party with back in the day!
